Benevolent indie brands that help sustain the earth’s beauty — while boosting yours. Mercury levels aside, here’s another reason to steer clear of tuna rolls: The bluefin species (popular in sushi specials) is at risk of extinction. This is one reason why the mother-daughter duo behind Chantecaille is donating 5 percent of the proceeds from their eye and cheek compacts to the Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation (pewoceanscience.org), which strives to stop overfishing, so your grandkids can have sashimi, too.

ANIMAL INSTINCTS
Kate Hudson and David Babaii

Introduced to WildAid by activist extraordinaire Angelina Jolie, Babaii rallied client and close confidante Hudson to help develop David Babaii for WildAid, a haircare line that donates 10 percent of all profits to the animal-conservation group. The fauna-loving pair has spent the past three years ensuring that what’s left out of the products—sulfates, parabens, and of course, all animal products—is just as important as the nourishing Amazonian cupuaçu butter and mineral-rich volcanic ash that go in.

As many beauty brands get on the eco-friendly bandwagon, a few are–and have been–making a big difference.

These companies were in a recent report at the Daily Mail Online:

Chantecaille shells out 5% from the proceeds of its gorgeous Protect Paradise compacts for Protect Paradis compacts for eyes and face, and donates it to the Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation to fund vital research of fish sustainability and marine preservation.

Since 1994, MAC has been supporting the battle against AIDS and HIV by putting every cent raised from its Viva Glam Lipstick into the MAC Aids Fund. MAC has made a staggering $150 million since then.

Dedicated to reducing pollution (and backed by Bono), Nude Skincare combines eco-chic with eco-credibility by using shipping instead of airmiles to move its beauty cargo. The brand, with products like Nude Skincare Moisturizing Body Polish, has also made its packaging entirely recyclable, and aims for its products to be entirely biodegradable in the long run.
