It seems women continue to panic at the sight of every stray hair and are regularly tempted to over pluck for fear of being labelled a hairy beast.

Over plucked eyebrows take months to grow back, and long term plucking can lead to permanent thinning of the brows. Pencilled in eyebrows look a bit ‘old hat’ nowadays, and can look extremely unnatural if applied with a heavy hand. Therefore it is important to approach eyebrow shaping with care, and to take a considered approach before launching in with the tweezers.

Firstly, natural looking brows should start in line with the corner of the eye, although a slightly wider gap is also acceptable. As a rule, the brows should end in line with the outer corner of the eye and a natural looking arch should be in line with the outer edge of the iris.

So before beginning the plucking, it’s good to draw in some guide marks with a kohl pencil to help work out which hairs should stay and which should go.

Select a sturdy pair of tweezers with a slanted edge, which helps grip the hairs as close as possible to the skin, and ensure that the skin is clean before plucking starts. Use a magnifying mirror and work in good light to avoid eye strain, and pluck one hair at a time in line with the direction of growth, holding the skin taught to avoid pinching.

Always give sensitive skin time to recover, and apply a spot of a gentle, soothing cream following plucking to deal with any redness or stinging.

Finally, a little eyebrow gel or petroleum jelly can be brushed onto the brows to keep them in good shape as part of a daily make-up routine.

If it’s true that you can see the soul through a person’s eyes, then you’ve got a lot to bare when you try these three eye popping makeup styles. Pick your mood and what you want to say without saying a word – I’m seductive innocence, I’m a wild child, or I dare you to ask me to dance…it will be worth it. Whatever your message is, here’s how to look the part.

First is the look that may say I’m innocent, but it screams you’ve never met anyone like me. These are eyes that speak straight from natural beauty amplified by lashes that won’t quit. This look isn’t about color. It’s about depth and dimension. To get it, sweep a natural eye shadow in a shade darker than your skin along your lids and in the crease. That’s the most color your face will see tonight. Lips and cheeks are subtle, luminous and fresh – pale pinks that aren’t flesh colored. Your entire look is based on your lashes. Begin with a coat of mascara to add volume and color to your natural lash line. Next dab a small amount of lash glue on the back of your hand, near your thumb and allow it to get slightly tacky. You’re not applying a line of fake lashes. You’re adding about ten clusters of fake lashes that will spread your top lashes into a dazzling array of come hither lashes. Using tweezers dip the first cluster in to the glue and stick it to the base of your natural lashes, not your skin. Begin in the center and work your way out and then back in toward your nose. Va-voom!

For the wild child in you that’s ready to play, take cat eyes to the next level of beautiful. Forget black. You’re not going to a rave. Instead try a gel liner in violet, indigo or rose-red. Begin your liner in a point at the extreme inner corner of your eye. As you near the beginning of your natural lash line, begin to widen the stroke. The key is to color the entire portion of your lid that is visible when your eyes are open. Continue to widen the line into the crease all the way across your eye. Stop just above the outer corner of your eye. To create the cat eye peak, sweep the liner out and slightly up in a curve where you stopped at the outer corner. Bring it back into your eye a little less than half way back up the natural curve of your eye. Fill in the peak with liner. Do the other eye at the point of the peak and the highest part of the top curve to create even eyes. Practice before you want to go out. This one takes a little work to perfect. Finish with mascara – light on the bottom.
