Healthy Nails

Nail are composed a of keratin – a type of protein – and minerals. Nails provide protection for your finger tips and are meant to be strong yet flexible, smooth and glossy. Nail health relies on sufficient supplies of protein, B vitamins, vitamin A, calcium, zinc, iodine and iron. When your body isn’t receiving enough of these vital nutrients, or doesn’t absorb or assimilate them properly, the deficiency may surface on your nails.
Natural nail care means more than having a regular manicure. When people include their essential oils such as aromapathics in a basic manicure they benefit both physically and psychologically.

By using essential oils in your hand and nail care products instead of the mineral oil or other petroleum-based products that have been used in the past, aromapathic care for hands as well as nails in an natural way. However, essential oils do more than beautify the skin and nails. They can also influence moods: peppermint energizes tried hands; rosemary helps treat dry skin; lavender is calming; ginko biloba helps protect the hands from damaging free radicals; witch hazel helps improve skin tone and circulation; and horsetail has its youthful action. Any one of these can be added to your hot oil treatment, and should be present in any hand, nail, and foot product you purchase.

SHE does superstar songbird Pink’s nails when she’s in town. Harry Potter author JK Rowling and Pixie Geldof have also been pampered by the Scots nail expert.

Now hot on the heels of London Fashion Week and having been voted Harper & Queen’s Best Manicurist in Scotland, nail technician and beauty therapist Claire McAndrew is giving us a sneak peak into her life of glamour and celebrity.

And she’s agreed to give us a look into her manicure box of tricks, with tips on how to keep nails looking their manicured best.

Claire, 34, who owns and runs the Medusa hairdressing salons in Edinburgh and Musselburgh (www.medusahair.co.uk) with husband Colin, said: “I love working with nails because I love the results.

“You can always change the look of someone’s hands, whether they have bitten or long nails. I think women feel more confident and glamorous with great looking hands. I love being part of that process.”

So what was it like working with one of the most famous women in the music business?

“Pink was really nice. I was asked if I would do her nails when she performed in Edinburgh at the MTV Awards and so I went to her hotel.”

“I have to admit feeling a bit nervous about meeting her as she always comes across as a bit aggressive. But she’s nothing like that.”
